According to a senior manager at CALB, quoted by Reuters, the factory will position Portugal at the forefront of EV battery production in Europe. “This project will not only create new jobs but also solidify Portugal’s role as a leader in the European battery industry,” the manager stated. CALB announced on November 3, 2022, that it signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Portuguese government to build its first production site in Europe. The company's battery project in Portugal was planned at an industrial zone near a port in Sines, which is located in the heart of European logistics, a CALB press release said at the time.
The project, heralded as a step towards greening the European automotive industry, is expected to contribute over 4% to Portugal's national GDP once it reaches its full production capacity of 15 GWh of energy storage annually. CALB intends to erect five buildings across a 92-hectare plot within the Industrial and Logistics Zone of Sines (ZILS).
