Data on the wind resource in 33 locations in South Sudan are available. Wind energy potential generally poor during rainy season. Locations south and north east of the country have the least potential. Possibility of development of small wind turbines for electricity generation.
The situation in South Sudan, the world's newest country, is unique. It does not have any real existing energy infrastructure.
At present, the grid-based electricity situation in South Sudan is characterized by routine power outages and lack of efficiency in the distribution system . In fact, in 2020, 580 GWh or nearly 100 % of electricity was produced from oil and gas, and just 1 GWh from renewable sources .
The most commonly-used energy sources are biomass and petroleum products. Forests, animal wastes, agricultural residues, and sugar cane are all biomass resources in South Sudan. . The country's reliance on oil pervades all aspects of the economy, accounting for roughly 72 % of the 700 Ktoe total primary energy supply.
In short, the South Sudanese scenario thus adds two additional factors to the energy trilemma- the resource curse and the need to consolidate power through national energy projects. In the rest of the article we discuss the case within the context of the post-conflict literature, while not losing sight of the unique aspects of the country.
Nhial Tiitmamer , a researcher on energy and environmental issues in South Sudan and a current policy analyst for SUDD Institute, concludes that solar energy has the greatest potential to be South Sudan's immediate and most affordable energy transition path towards a sustainable energy transition and even job creation.
